April 27 is the 12th birthday of Wang Yanyan, who lives in Linfen of central Shanxi province. On that day, Yanyan’s parents held a lavish banquet in the city’s high-class hotel and hired professional party planning company to arrange the celebration. In addition to the delicacies and the grandeur, another superlative was dozens of origamis made of high-denomination Chinese paper money that hung around Yanyan’s neck. The origamis’ face value is thousands of dollars, whereas her grandparents, uncles and aunts paid additional money for the painstaking professional labor to put them together.  At the table, Yanyan’s classmates cast their envious eyes on the considerable amount of money and yearned for the coming of their own birthdays. This doesn't seem to be related in anyway to typical Chinese who hide their wealth for fear of crab mentality.

Why the negativity? I agree that a sound value system is a balanced one, not leaning too far toward material interests, but we live in the real world. Why can’t this be looked at in a positive light? Look at it this way: her parents are giving her a huge future boost. If the money is going to be used for investments in aid of her secure future, what’s wrong with that? Why shouldn’t she be able to step into young adulthood with a sound financial footing already in place?

Now, if all that money is going to be spent on material possessions, and silly, inconsequential things, then yes, I agree that the parents are giving their little girl a very negative message, and possibly contributing to a world class entitled brat. It all depends on how the money is going to be used.
