In a news documentary program, Channel 12 of China Central Television (the law and society focused channel) displayed a photo of a female suspect of a murder case. Even though the photo had been blurred allegedly in an effort to protect the identity of the woman, eagled-eyed Chinese netizens immediately recognized that it is actually a photo of Japanese adult video actress Sora Aoi. The news spread virally on Chinese micro-blogosphere, leading CCTV’s official website to take down the video clip in question.

In the news show Net of Heaven (Jing: the name comes from Chinese saying: The net of Heaven has large meshes, but it lets nothing through, which means that justice will eventually be brought to each and every offense and crime, large or small) aired on Monday evening on CCTV-12, the documentary recounted a story in which a womanizing hair stylist Liu Bin from Sichuan province dated altogether 30 women and dumped one of them after she got pregnant. The vengeful woman hired a contract killer to murder the womanizer.

The photo of the woman who paid to kill Liu Bin appeared twice in the show, each time for about one second. The voice-over claimed that the woman in the photo is the ex-girlfriend of the victim Liu Bin. She and Liu Bin got to know each other in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, and were together for three years before the breakup.

Even though the facial features of the ex-girlfriend have been obscured, some netizens identified her as Japanese porn star Sora Aoi at first glance. They compared the screenshot of the CCTV show with the Sora Aoi photo from their prized collection, and pointed out that the pose, the clothes and the background were all the same. Some netizen even joked that the womanizer’s death is not in vain if Sora Aoi was once his girlfriend.

The post has become hugely popular. However, at around 4 p.m. yesterday, CCTV has removed the video clip from its website.

CCTV has been caught on multiple occasions fabricating or rigging part of its news content. In January, it passed off scenes from Top Gun in its fight jet news. In March, it claimed Libyan people took to the streets and protested the U.S.-led multinational coalition forces for their intervention into Libya’s internal affairs, whereas in fact Libyan people cheered and unfurled a banner reading “Vive le France.”

Sora Aoi enjoys maddening popularity in China as Chinese favorite and most familiar porn star. Within 24 hours after she launched her microblog on Sina in last November, she gained a fan base of 220,000 people. So far, she has over 3.8 million followers. Even the police, uninterested in any other microblogger, watch her closely.

I can't tell if CCTV is just too lazy to get visuals for their TV news spots or if they just don't even bother to do any journalism and sit around thinking up news they think people will find entertaining and "informative".
