A Chinese young man can’t wait to have the long-anticipated Apple iPad3, and as a result, he made one himself, filmed the entire assembling process and uploaded it to the internet. The Do-It-Yourself iPad cost 2,000; the R&D took half a month, and it runs on Microsoft operating system. The exquisite craftsmanship has wowed many net users in China as well as abroad.
Even though the hand-made “iPad” is palpably thicker and heavier than the authentic one, it looks quite cool. The Apple logos on the front and back of the tablet computer are simply stickers.
According to AFP, Liu Xinying, 21, works at a computer store in Jinan, eastern Shandong province. He said that since the video clip was uploaded a month ago, dozens of people have approached him about having him made one tablet for them, but he rejected them all. “I did it for fun. It cost 2,000 to make.”

Selected comments from Youku:
teebest: Very good indeed. (It) seems quite good. The only defect is the Apple logo. Why do we have to learn from others? Why not design your own logo? Any logo you design, whatever it looks like, would be better than an apple. At least it gives people the impression that it is absolutely the awesome made-in-China.
smallgcq1989:I would only admire him if the integrated circuit, the chip and the display are also DIYed. For so much time he had only made a shell and connected the wire to the switch, and a bunch of idiots thought he was awesome.
nicholastsao123:Electronic products are not designer with paper, pen and rulers. Integrated circuits are not made by soldering. Generally speaking, electronics have at least computer-aided design and manufacturing. How can circuit on the nano scale be made by soldering? This man can at most repair TV set and radio. Chinese technology is still backward.
hsyh17t:I despise those who only know how to say and not how to do. He has damn made it, and you can only bullshit here. F**k. If your mouth is so capable, why not do it yourself?
hughzyq:Seems it is using hard disk drive. The drive may not be able to make it this way. What about heat dissipation? And Windows system with the Android notification bar? Weird. Why use resistive touchscreen??? So many questions.
凌蓝落:I despise you. Even if it is only about assembling, can you? Do you think Lenovo and Dell only assemble parts they purchase? @章辉1122233: Please allow me to despise you…If DIY is only about assembling, I can DIY my computer too. //@devilxlc: To those who think only making one’s own circuit board is called DIY, please allow me to despite you.
ShowAmen:I feel the same. //@易宇豪: Why all these people like to use Linkin Park’s songs?
tayda: Let me summarize: As long as it is a DIY video featuring a foreigner, we always comment “Awesome.” As long as it is a DIY video featuring a Chinese, we begin searching for excuses.
2002coco:From the idea to the plan, from implementation to completion, everything is great. A single man can finish the whole thing. I really admire him simply for the spirit and the determination. (He’s) Unlike some people. China never lacks people who only do talking. People who know the theories also abound. But how many of them can really make one? They say he can only repair TV set and radio. Yes, maybe he is just at this level. But what about 5 years later? 10 years later? What about the team made up of people like him? They may be the future. Working is always better than (simply) talking!
向日葵望着太阳呆呆傻笑~:This brother is talented!!!
GhostlyMACH:I am floored…Have come to leave my name here.
天123lkj:Little brother (humble way to refer to self) I have just entered high school. A rookie in electronics. I play with radio. This brother is very very very awesome.
若小孩:Kowtowing.
ipscer:It is enough if he has the dexterity. But I guess he revamped it from a netbook.

It's cool, but the guy isn't going to be offered a job at NASA because he can solder a few wires and make a shell. I'm amused by the chinese commentators that ask critics if they can duplicate what this guy did. Why cheer a copycat? It's fun.. like building an Iron Man Suit for show… but that doesn't mean you're an engineer. In fact I'd give the Iron Man Suit guy more credit for his ingenuity in bringing something fictional to life.
The cool part was the case. That's it.
Sans the case, I build stuff like that everyday. It's just that I don't feel that it's that great that I have to go through lengths to put stickers on it. Why spend so much time on a dev board anyway? Funny thing is it costs way more than a much more functional machine from any manufacturer.
I am beginning to think that it's not Chinese (or Asians for that matter – I live in Japan BTW) that don't know how to do anything original. It must be that they like to copy. This thing is as original as it gets, but then it gets donned with Apple stickers. Maybe it has to do with group preference. Where as in the west, individualism is dominant. We go through lengths, as this guy did, to make an original machine or at least remove the manufactures markings to fool others into thinking it's original. Here the exact opposite takes place.
The only cool part is the case. Where to find it?
For my tablet I made a wood one.
