Photos: Netizens ridicule Shanghai’s architectural designs with photoshop
China has gone on a construction spree that strives for superlatives. State-of-the-art architecture has literally transformed the landscape and skyline of the ancient civilization into a glass-and-steel modern jungle.
However, Chinese netizens do not always laud towering or sprawling edifices, among which are, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai South Railway Station, the Bund Center, China Telecom Building, and the recently-built Shanghai World Financial Center. It turns out their imagination and innovation, manifested in their spoof pictures, parallels that of the original designers.
Mocking of modern architecture in China reached its first point of insanity in late 2007, when construction of the new headquarters for China Central Television (CCTV) came to an end. Chinese are put off by its radical and odd shape, nicknamed it dakucha (大裤衩), which means “big boxer shorts”, and were at one time engaged in the conspiracy theory that the designer was hell-bent on humiliating the city with a structure resembling human genitalia.
