Chu Chu, a transgender woman, rents a small efficiency apartment near the transportation hub of the city of Bozhou, Anhui province. Chu Chu was born in 1975 in a rural family to parents who were folk artists. The family already had five daughters. Back then, he, the sixth child, was the only son. The father passed away when children were still very little. Since his childhood, he made a living by singing traditional local opera with his mother and sisters. Chu Chu said that he had felt like a girl for as long as he could remember. He loved being dressed up and wearing makeup. He prefers clothes with patterns and prints. After he saw a fairly popular artist perform in Nanjing when he was in his early 20s, the idea of sex change dawned on him.
At 27, he had a breast augmentation surgery in Zhengzhou, Henan province unbeknownst to his family. The next year he spent more than 100,000 yuan (roughly US$13,000) on a sexual reassignment surgery. It was very successful, which transformed him into a real woman. In 2010, a 32-year-old fan of hers fell in love with Chu Chu, and became her “husband.” They keep each other’s company all the time.

That skin, that finger…Please don’t use the word “woman” on him…
Really perverse. What kind of world is this? If you were born a man, just be a man. Why do you change to a woman? And that so-called husband of his. Also a pervert. It’s not as if he were a real woman. Two men stay together…The mere thought of it is sick…Besides, you are really a disgrace on your parents…
Please respect other people’s lifestyle. I used to detest it. But we are not in the position to vituperate at them!
I agree with the comment above. Everyone has a way to live his life. It is okay if we don’t support it. But we cannot insult others.
Five sisters in his family and he is the only boy. It’s easy to tell how much importance his parents attached to him. But then he changed his gender. He is a real disappointment to his parents.
The face, teeth and jaw line when (she is) smiling still look like a man’s. And the hands and skin are really coarse. Still don’t look like a woman when examined closely. Besides, who, as a real woman, is willing to flash her breasts and let others examine?
His husband must feel really sour…
I very much admire her husband’s courage.
Others live their lives as they please. They do what they want. Why the hell does it concern us? But still, I do feel a little uncomfortable, visually…
Why they are all male-to-female transgender, and no female-to-male transgender is seen? Is it because there isn’t the right material to make it?
In Islamic world, this can be condemned to death.
A stupid question: is what she uses to pee still male or female?
From the standpoint of our forefathers, he was the only boy in his family. Is he fair and worthy to his deceased father, his mother, who is still alive, and his four sisters? (He has) sullied the society!
A family with mostly girls and an only boy or a family with mostly boys and an only girl would almost always end up like this. God like to play jokes.
It says the surgery was a success. But why (she) still looks a man? The dark beard stubble. Well, even though I can’t bear the sight, I still have got to respect them.
Have some skin care and things will improve. The skin is visibly dehydrated. Brighten it and moisturize it.
Actually many of those who wish to change their gender should really go to see a psychiatrist. Because of the psychological trauma, they stepped on a path they shouldn’t have chosen. The world is getting messier. Every one will more or less have psychological problems…
Even their parents don’t think it is a disgrace, why you, an outsider, have the business to point your finger at this? Parents only want children to be happy. That’s all.
The society is still not yet liberal and tolerant!
He really doesn’t look feminine. His jaw line is still very much like that of a man. And the skin doesn’t look like a woman’s. Unlike the transgender people I have seen before. I always thought they are beautiful and even way more coquettish and flamboyant than normal women…This person’s transition wasn’t thorough enough.
This is caused by his parents raised him like a girl since his childhood! He must have also been heavily influenced by his sisters!
Look like a woman? Or a Shemale?
Such people are quite pathetic.

It is obvious this youth is not eating enough meat. He should soak his feet in hot water and not spend so money on collagen drink!!!
Jing Gao, the author, should respect Chu Chu and her obvious self-identification as a woman, not as a man. There are many things that we, as heterosexuals and even homosexuals, do not understand about transsexuality. But we are not the ones in their shoes, we are not the people living those lives and most certainly should not place judgment on their personal decisions!
Hello! Thank you for your reply.
When I was translating the article, I also had the question about the use of pronoun. However, I consulted an English news story published in Spiegel, a very respectable and world-renowned publication, about the famous Chinese transgender female dancer Jin Xing. (http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518,407683,00.html) In this news story, the writer chose to use “he,” “him” and “his” before Jin Xing’s sex-change operation and “she”, “her” after the operation. So I followed this example. Hope you understand that I intended no discrimination or disrespect.
Is he a sodomite or not..?
Why Brad, you hungry for some cock?
Seriously though, what the fark has it got to do with you?
With so many “normal” people in China unable to get a fair shake, how do people like this fair? Sex isn’t determined by the body, but by the brain. Can anyone see into their brain and know what’s there?
You go girl! I am happy that you became all that you are against all odds and that you found happiness. Just go easy on the makeup though. Sometimes, less is more.
