An illegal shipment of bear paws was intercepted at the airport of Chongqing on January 19. Altogether 10 bear paws were found in two styrofoam cartons.

On the morning of January 19, a man in his 30s got off from a van at the cargo services of Chongqing’s Jiangbei Airport with 7 cartons. “Please ship these to Shenzhen,” the man said to the staff, claiming that it was seafood inside.

According to Chinese regulations, all shipments by air travel must be opened and inspected. When a security screener examined the content of the black plastic bags inside two of the cartons, large and furry paws showed.

All 10 bear paws were chopped off from hind feet at joints. The police inferred from the dried muscles that the bears were killed at least 6 months ago.

The person claimed no knowledge of the origin of the bear paws. He said he had been entrusted by others to transport the cartons, which he thought were only seafood.

The police said that the paw trade is strictly proscribed, and the population of black bears is very small within Chinese borders, the bear paws were very likely sneaked in from abroad.

Bear paws are a gourmet delicacy in traditional Chinese cuisine, often used in soups. Despite that eating paws have been outlawed in China, the demand is still strong among rich Chinese. Bear paw is sold in the underground market at 1,000 yuan per kilo, or roughly US$72.2 per pound.

What are the LDs (Note: Leaders, slang for officials or authorities) gonna do with the bear paws? Steam it or braise it in soy sauce?

Despicable human beings…In this world, nothing is more formidable than the mankind.

You eat chicken, duck, fish or meat every day, will you feel that you are despicable too?

The second floor (Note: referring to the second commenter in the line), you are an inhuman beast!

The commenter above is very humane. Just go sacrifice yourself to feed bears.

Will you feel pain if your hands are chopped off? Will you still be typing?!

Let me phrase this question for the first and the fifth floor carefully: Have you guys ever eaten any meat? If you have, drop the act and nonsence. We are actually birds of the same feather!

Every time some one broach the topic of protecting wildlife and eco-environment, there will definitely be people who jump out and yell at you, “So do you eat pork or not?!” When you encounter illiterates like that who have zero logical thinking, simply ignore them.

For what did we humans spend hundreds of thousands of years to climb to the very top level of the food chain?? We human beings used to be food in the mouths of other animals. Would they consider the question “Will you feel pain if your hands are chopped off? Will you still be typing?!” when they preyed on humans????

Let’s only deal with the situation in question: can we be at least more humane to animals on the verge of extinction?? Of course, the pigs and sheep we eat are domesticated and raised by humans, just like crops and woods. You can decide which one to chop (kill) and which one not to chop. But I do think the practice of saying yes to eating pigs and no to eating dogs is out of the line.

Dogs have been men’s best friend ever since men were wearing fig leaves. Pigs were prey of the fig-leaf-wearing men and their dogs. That’s why pigs can be eaten, whereas eating dogs is inhumane.

The second floor, you are a bastard. Don’t kill lives wantonly. It’s not like you can’t eat any (animal). It would be naturally the best if you go entirely vegetarian. Killing animals was purely for the sake of survival. Now that humans can survive and support themselves, why commit slaughter, especially to the wildlife? Think sins of human beings are not enough?

In fact, mammals like pigs and cows bond with humans very easily. If you’ve seen the scenes at the slaughterhouses, you will not have the heart to (kill them). Everyone, just try your best to be vegetarian. Or at least don’t kill or abuse animals at will. They are in essence not that much different from us.

The law of the jungle, the survival of the strongest. This is the natural law. No one can change it.

We should draw a line between food and non-food. People have need for ordinary food, including Buddhist monks nowadays. But what we are opposed to is not consumption of meat, but consumption of this particular type of meat. If you ask me how this type of meat is any different from other meat, I can’t answer you. But I will then ask you how your meat is any different from this type of meat.

It was smuggled from abroad. So who is the buyer?

You should correct your math; 1000 CNY is about 156 US$

Thank you for your reply. However, I converted yuan per kilo to dollar per pound, so there is also weight conversion involved. A kilo equals about 2.2 lbs. That’s where the US$72.2 per pound comes from.
