Pic of the day: Nanchang Train Station fences off benches, calling travelers’ rest an eyesore

In the southeastern city of Nanchang, the management of the city’s railway station has enclosed all outdoor stone benches with metal fencing to prevent travelers from sitting down on them, saying that travelers using the benches may harm the city’s image. Travelers hoping to stop for a rest have to either lean on the fences or sit on the ground.

A staffer at the management office said what travellers call ‘stone benches’ are in fact raised beds in which trees are planted. Some travelers mistook them for benches and sat on them, and even littered trash around the trees. “In addition to damaging the trees, some travellers lied on them for a nap and caused a great deal of harm to the image of Nanchang Railway Station, which serves as the showpiece of the capital city (of Jiangxi province).”

Most netizens who saw the images on Sina Weibo, China’s twitter-like microblogging service, agree that the fences are ugly, unnecessary, unwanted, and counterproductive, as some travelers simply climbed over the metal fence to sit down inside, “So erecting these fences looks any better? Having travellers sit on the ground looks any better?” One user commented. “So the image of a city outweighs everything else?” Another wrote.

“No Climbing,” the metal sign says.

Officials are basked in debauchery in hotels, whereas we stand in the square basked in the sun.

Officials, do you really know what it feels like when a person on the way to catch a train or waiting for a train has been standing and walking all day without a place to sit down?

You have so much stainless steel to make fences, but you just can’t use some stainless steel to make a few chairs?

Rural migrants might have caused harm to the city’s image, but you have caused harm to the nation’s image.

Rural migrants don’t really cause harm to the city’s image, but you have really harmed the nation’s image.

I’ve always thought that those around the trees served as a double purpose for the “raised beds” for the trees and also benches for the weary traveler or tourist. But I guess in the case of this city, it is simply a beautification for their city.
