Chongqing sex tape emboldens female TV host to report official who sexually assaulted her

From Sina Weibo and Beijing Times

A female TV host in northeast China revealed on the Internet that she had been forced to be in an extramarital sexual relationship with a party cadre and was even raped by him when she was seven-month pregnant. In return, the official used his power to register her unemployed mother as a retired worker at a local brewery so that her mother could receive pension benefits. The public confession came only one day after the sex tape of former Chongqing official Lei Zhengfu was leaked online, which the TV host said inspired her to blow the lid off the nasty scandal and end her life in terror and torture. So far, this party cadre has been removed from his post. Further investigation is under way.

Wang Dechun (Sina Weibo username: @王流浪2012), 42, was working at the state-run television station of Shuangcheng, Heilongjiang province. The official she has informed against is Sun Dejiang, a delegate to the People’s Congress of the city of Shuangcheng, the local legislature, and the general manager of the Shuangcheng City Industry Corporation, a state-run enterprise. Wang claimed that Sun had been harassing her since 1996, and had forced her to have sex with him multiple times, including once during her pregnancy.

On November 26, three days after airing all the dirty laundry on Sina Weibo, Wang Dechun appeared and talked to Beijing Times. Faced with the reporter, Wang looked very tense and yet tired.

Wang said when she first met Sun Dejiang for a news report, then general manager of Shuangcheng Brewery, she was at the peak of her career. Ever since, Sun tried various ways to approach her. “He showed much restraint. For example, when he treated me to dinner, he would ask many people along to dispel my doubt,” Wang Dechun said.

Wang said her first sexual contact with Sun took place after one dinner. Sun gave everyone else a ride home before he drove Wang, then still under the influence of alcohol, to a remote part of the city and had sex with her inside the vehicle. “I was back then not sober enough. I tried to resist him, in vain.”

After Wang sobered up, she was very scared and upset. She asked that they “have no further contact like this”, but “Sun took out a tape recorder and replayed a segment he recorded while having sex with me. He said that if I refused him, he would release the tape and give me an unsavory name in Shuangcheng.”

“Face and name were more important to me than anything else back then. I cannot lose this job,” Wang said. Her passion for her job was beyond anyone’s imagination. “I had worked 100 times harder than ordinary people to accomplish what I had had. I did not want to lose what I have achieved overnight,” Wang had chose to remain silent and compromise.

Among the excruciatingly detailed written report she has submitted, there was one thing that was accused by netizens as a monstrous and heinous crime: Wang said that on one evening in the winter of 1999, when she was 7-month pregnant, her doorbell suddenly rang hysterically. She answered it, only to hear the voice of Sun, who ordered her to open the door.

“My husband wasn’t home that evening, so he kept ringing the doorbell, while I was on pins and needles inside,” Wang said she was shuddering with fear on her couch, until the doorbell finally stopped ringing. She thought Sun might have left, but then there were heavy thumps on her door. “He kept yelling, asking me to open the door, saying he had things to clear up with me. I was afraid my neighbors might hear him, so I opened the door. He dashed in and shoved me into the bedroom. I cried and struggled while begging him for mercy on my baby…He was unmoved.”

Sun even threatened Wang with her family. He used his clout to falsify documents and create pension packages for a number of people, including Wang’s unemployed mother, who were not workers at the brewery. After Wang had to divorce her husband at Sun’s behest, Sun asked Wang to maintain sexual relations with him, otherwise he would not only tell her parents about their relationship, but cancel her mother’s pension package and discredit her as well.

In order to add more credibility to her exposé, Wang Dechun also posted detailed information of her ID number, cellphone number together with a photo of her press credentials onto Sina Weibo, the immensely popular social media site. She said Lei Zhengfu’s sex tape incident has greatly encouraged her. “I am ready to risk everything I have. I am going to tell on him… A woman, unless she is really cornered and left with no way out, will not put herself in the teeth and eye of a storm.”

It was said that immediately after Wang blew the whistle, a gag order was issued from higher-ups to all state media in Heilongjiang province to limit public attention on the scandal to the minimum. The chief of Shuangcheng’s administration of broadcast media and the head of Shuangcheng television station both dodged media requests for interviews. The city’s discipline inspection commission cited Wang Dechun’s disappearance as the reason for little progress on investigation.

Wang Dechun actually has not disappeared. She is now hiding inside a small inn in a small city in South China, staring at her laptop screen day and night, trying to learn the developments of the case and what will happen to her. So scared for herself, she changed her phone number three times and cellphone twice within two days to get rid of “tracking” and “positioning.” She said she would not return to Shuangcheng in the near future, because “I can’t hold my head up there; moreover, I am concerned about my safety.”

The public exposure and the enormous publicity has probably pressured the local authorities into action. Later investigation established the veracity of her account. On December 1, Sun Dejiang was deposed as the local congress delegate. Today, he was fired from his post in the Shuangcheng City Industry Corporation.

When asked if she had considered the possible consequences, Wang said, “The moment I stood up, I have lost, regardless of the final ruling. If the truth surfaces, I lose my reputation. If they rule this is a false accusation, then I lose completely. My youth has long gone. My innocence has been lost forever.”

good for her. A very brave woman and that is what China needs most, brave citizens. These pigs will continue to do this kind of thuggery until they are stopped by actions of the people. Let us know how this turns out.

What a horrific ordeal she’s had to endure. What makes it more tragic is that she still has to suffer through laughable chinese legal system.

I wonder what average chinese think of this. Do they see her as a victim (as most in the west would) or do they think she’s also to blame?

They almost unanimously think the cadre is despicable and deserves punishment, but when it comes to their judgment of the former TV host, some despise her for taking advantage of her relationship with the cadre, that is, by having her mother registered as a retiree and collecting pension, and believe she should have stood up or at least refused to comply with the cadre after their first contact. That is the thing about Chinese society: women are judged against a different and much harsher set of moral standards than men are.

Not only in China. The West has much victim-blaming to offer has well and each time a woman is either raped or sexually assaulted, her morality and life will be examined inch by inch in order to make sure that she “deserves” to be considered a victim. This is women’s lot everywhere.

This makes her braver and better than many men especially the creeps who are willing to turn a blind eye. Chinese society is very anti-rape but they don’t have as much an emotional education that Americans do – we have had decades of lifetime movies starting with Something About Amelia and years of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episodes to come to understand that rape is devastating and causes longterm trauma and doesn’t have to leave physical scars.
