A little girl in eastern China’s Wuhu city has been brutally abused and locked up by her own father and step-mother. Every night, she has to sleep in the bathroom. Before beating her, her step-mother often stuffs a towel into her mouth so that her cry won’t be heard easily.

But when her neighbor discovered she was black and blue all over, she pleaded the neighbor not to call the police, because she feared she might be beaten even harder and never see her own mother again.

So yesterday, the neighbor took to Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, and within less than 24 hours, it was shared over 90,000 times by indignant users who wanted to help.

Today, Wuhu police announced on Weibo that the little girl named ‘Douzi’ (Beanie) is now safe with them. Investigation is under way. But netizens have been asking, ‘Will the girl be returned to the same family after the abusive parents make some back-handed apologies and empty promises? Where is our child protective service and foster care system that can see to it this will never happen again?’

The police in China don’t have the best track record. Hopefully it’ll be possible to follow up this story and find out what, if anything, was actually done about this.

Great in theory. Personally I hate Disqus ’cause I always have problems making posts with it. Not sure why.

so sad to see child abuse. Children are just so helpless and innocent at that age. We really need to find out why people find it so easy to abuse children in this way. Sadly, many of these folks were abused when they were younger as well. Hope little Beanie finds safety and security and some love.
